Greetings Boomerang BTQ supporters!
My name is Lindsay Stawick, and I am Felicia Kiesel’s most favorite red head in all the world. I am also her best friend since 6th grade. I am honored to be a guest blogger for Boomerang’s blog page… Here I go!
A lot of people know October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know October is ALSO Domestic Violence Awareness Month? I work for a local non profit organization called the Domestic Violence Network (www.dvnconnect.org), so this month is very near and dear to my heart. I would like to share a few ways you can raise awareness for this important social issue facing our community and nation.
1. Wear purple on Thursday, October 20th! Wear purple clothing, earrings, necklace, or even paint your fingernails purple. If you do not have anything purple to wear, I know of an AMAZING small business on Mass Ave that does (hint, hint: Boomerang BTQ).
2. Tell your co-workers, friends, and/or family why you are wearing purple. Refer them to this blog or visit my organization’s Facebook page (Domestic Violence Network).
3. Learn about domestic violence and why this month is so important. 1 in 3 teenagers, 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 7 men experience dating abuse/domestic violence. 50% of Americans know someone who has been a victim of dating/domestic violence. This issue is REAL, and it’s important that we are not afraid to openly discuss it. Visit http://www.ncadv.org to learn more stats and facts.
Finally, if you are reading this, and you believe you are in an unhealthy or violent relationship, I want you to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. When you’re ready, talk to someone you trust about what you’re experiencing, and if you are ready to connect to local resources, dial 2-1-1.
